discussion with a friend of mine about technology and gaming, specifically as it pertains to women.
He claims that the culture of a tech/gaming combination is predominantly male and that only a very small fraction of women are both technologically savvy
and interested in gaming for reasons other than the
Wii Fit.
So he contends there may be women who can maneuver around the web, but they are extremely challenged when it comes to gaming, whether online or off.
Plus, he's got this strange fantasy that the handful of women that do play games somehow all look like this:
I told him that I didn't have any hard data on the issue, but that I was pretty sure that there were more women than we realize who could build a PC part by part and also beat you to shreds on
World of Warcraft (what up AlterEgo909!).
I believe that, unlike the die-hard men (
and I could be wrong), most of these women aren't seeking self-promotion.
For these women, I think it's more about the game experience... developing a great strategy, accomplishing the goal and appreciating the joy of the game, not how many friends and relatives know their handle or their standing on the leaderboards.
But hey... what do I know?
The truth is that you can never be certain about gender when playing online anyway. The toughest "guy" on your team could be a 19 year old cheerleader from Wisconsin.
But I can guarantee you, she doesn't look like this:

I am of the female gender and I'm fairly good at gaming. I love playing. Right now I'm stuck in Fallout 3.
Yes gamer girls can be pretty (i.e hot) or they may not, just like the guys can be good looking... or not.
though i don't play games anymore.. i think it's quite possible that girls CAN be serious gamers... i was told that the girls in korea who are SC freaks are pretty serious about waht they do.
if i had the time and the money.. i'd spend most of that playing games online.. but.. i dont.. so i won't. :C

Hell yeah. I don't know about the gorgeous part though. I once spent a week in my room gaming Final Fantasy 12 with 10 bags of chips, 2 six packs of pepsi's, glasses, a hoodie, oversized sweat pants, and a greasy PS2 controller. Not a lovely site..

I think they can be serious. Perhaps we women are more closet-gamers. In that, we tend to hide it from our lady friends and guy friends. The only guy who knows I'm a bit of a gamer is my brother.
And yes, girl gamers can be hot, but they can also be not. Just like boys

I think girls can be serious gamers...and pretty! I'm not entirely hardcore but gaming is most definately a part of me...and for the most part the guys I hang out with like it.

my female friends beat me at FPS all the time... the only thing i can beat them in is street fighter 4... i don't want to sound sexist or nothing by categorizing but i always assumed that girls played games for the social experience and men do it for some reward system... i say this because my female friends prefer playing in a group (WoW, guild wars, city of heroes) where as i like to hide in the corner playing my nintendo ds (poke'mon)...

Hey. I'm def. a gamer girl and I've played it all. I mean, I play from Mario, to WoW (used to at least), to L4D.
Maybe I can't exact compare to the girls up above but I'm not disgusting looking.

One of my best friends is amazing at Call of Duty. Back when the second one was big, she played constantly and would always be kicking guys asses. She actually ended up meeting a guy through the game and dating him, it was cute. She doesn't play as much anymore though because she has college to deal with but when she does play, she is still pretty good.
As for myself, I have and play some FPS but I'm not that great at any of them. Wii fit = <3

I used to be a pretty serious gamer, but not so much any more... life kinda gets in the way, but I know my way around most games, but I'm horrible at the ones that involve controling a little guy who's running around trying to shoot things. Give me a character with a sword and I'm in.

Its like saying "ARE THERE ANY MALE NURSES?" yeah i think girls can be as serious as men, and be really good at them. i personally enjoy games, i may not be the best, but i'm pretty serious about them.
i have noticed though that guys do seem to have a natural tendency to do better at a game and pick up on it faster than a women. well compared to my sister and i, my younger brother seems to figure out a game or beat it faster than us, even if he started after we have.
Well, I am gorgeous.
But I am also not a serious gamer, but I know my way around the battlefield on Halo 3 and I can hold my own at about a half dozen other games. I think plenty of girls can be very serious gamers and some of them may even look like those girls in the pictures.
haha we can totally be hardcore about gaming too! i cannot count the all nighters i've pulled to play games... and yea sometimes i play naked =P

Girls can be real gamers, it is an obvious truth, but there are 3 major problems:
-What games they do play that would be considered more of a manly game, or more feminine?
-Why don't these girls make themselves more public about it/promote themselves?
-Why can't guys accept the fact that what was proclaimed to be our "territory" be shared with girls?
To the first Q: If you only play games on the Wii or DS as alot of commercials show, then in a guys eyes, your not a gamer; Untill you have layed fingers on a PS3 or 360 and played games, you not a gamer (In public eyes).
Second Q: I can't answer this myself, maybe girls don't want to seem like nerds infront of their friends or anything. Maybe they've seen what happens to other girls who admit they love games (harrasment, denial for all they say, etc.) But maybe that wouldn't happen until girls do self-promote themselves widely, but thats just me. :D
Third Q: We as "manly men" have to protect our space by any means neccessary, and people still use "you got beaten by a girl!" to this day...don't exactly need that in gaming. When we'll accept girls, as serious players, I don't know, sorry ladies. :( (side note: I'd love for girls to be considered real gamers)
Yes, girls can be serious gamers. I can attest to that. I'm addicted to games and my mom laughs at me for it. ^_^

One time whilst playing Call of Duty 4 I was 42/8. At the end of the game all my teammates were praising me, when I said my thanks they were shocked that I'm a girl.
I don't have a gorgeous face, but I am damn serious about my video games. Although I'm sure there are girls just as serious as me who are absolutely beautiful!
@Icecold4u@xanga - In regards to question numero dos, the reason that I (and this is just me, I can't speak for other girls) don't announce my obsession to the world is that I don't think it's necessary! I am super proud to be a serious gamer, all my friends know about it, but I don't run online and yell at all the boys so they know that they're playing with a girl. I just want to play the game, I don't need guys to acklowledge my seriousness.
I play for the adrenaline and excitement! Not for socializing. :P

A: Sure. If they can devote the time to gaming as we can, then they can just as easily. Shit, my tutor into video gaming was my older sister. I've long since outshined her, but she has more to do with a child and job-maintenance.

Mileage varies on the woman in question just like a guy's looks can vary. Whether or not a gamer chick is ugly or not is based on the amount of care a woman spends on her body; not on her habits.
There is such a possiblity. Gaming itself has challenges that everyone wants to get over with. If I have gamer girlfriend it will be my bast happiness in my life.
