  • Tetris: 25 Years of Falling with Style

Unless you just came out of a coma and awoke this day to visit HardestLevel (which would be totally awesome, by the way), you've probably played a game or two or 10,000 of Tetris. According to its Wikipedia page, Tetris was created on this day in 1984 by Alexey Pajitnov. Come 2009, its popularity has failed to subside. I imagine kids in high schools today are still downloading Tetris to their graphing calculators while they should be paying attention in pre-calc. Not that I ever did that or anything.

Tetris' sustained prevalence in the gaming world, I believe, is a testament to the simplicity of its design. There are falling blocks of different sizes. You have to make them into whole lines for them to disappear by moving and rotating them before they reach the top. That's it! All you need is a controller and one button, maybe two for a quick drop of the block. Anyone can learn to play it, but it does take some degree of strategy and pattern recognition skills to be very good.

Undoubtedly, Tetris is a classic and a major part of the video game culture. Mr. Pajitnov, we salute you!

What is your favorite version of Tetris?
