Online gaming has become one of the biggest features lately; you see it everywhere whether it be on a gaming console or on the computer. The question is, is it killing split-screen gaming?
I remember when I was young and played the NES and SNES. Just about every game was two players and was either split-screen with players acting at the same time, or you took turns like in Super Mario Brothers.
Lately I've been noticing more one player games. This started around the time 3D gaming started. Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider, and Resident Evil, just to name a few, are all one player games. Sports games and shooters are the only genres that keep multiplayer without the need of online matchmaking.
Now they have brought back multiplayer but most games don't or can't play on the same system...oh no, you have to play it online with two different systems and two different TVs.
Here is an example: UNO for Xbox Live.
My girlfriend loves this game and I sometimes play it as well, but we don't play at the same time. There is no option in this game to play with two controllers. If I want to play with her I have to buy another Xbox 360, put it in the bedroom, sign up for Xbox Live (which is $60), and then I can play with her.
I honestly think it's a bunch of crap that gaming companies are doing this now. They think no one in the world wants to actually sit around and play a game in person.
I will admit the closest game system that keeps multiplayer somewhat alive without the need of online is the Nintendo Wii. Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 both fail at keeping multiplayer gaming alive offline.
Is online gaming ruining offline console gameplay?

Yes. And it's a good thing. Why would you want to be playing with the screen all split in half? Get another TV.
Yes
Yes and it pisses me off. My husband and I love playing games together like Gears of War, etc but it's getting increasingly difficult to find split screen games. How kickass would it be to play prototype together, or assassin's creed, or any number of games! We bought Crackdown because of it's multiplayer possibilities only to find you can only play over xbox live! That's some bullshit right there. Bring back the split screen co-op!!
They just complain that it is so difficult for consoles to be able to handle rendering multiple screens at once, and a certain scale, blah blah blah, our system is already pushed to the limit...look, it's O.K....And just O.K. to use that reason once, but the thing that games need so much more of, options.
yes and it sucks with a family of eight. my brothers and sisters loved golden eye, animal crossing, resistance, and other split screen games. its a lot more fun playing with people next to you then with some random dude on the other end of the line. i feel its more social to play with people around you because there is more interaction.
You would see eachother's cards!
Oh yeah.
I wish more games were split screen co-op. Heck thats why I buy games. So I can play them with my friends who are sitting in the room with me. I find it just more fun. Currently my friends and I are having a blast with the new Ghostbusters game for the wii. Its split screen co-op!!!!
I've never really been an online play kinda person so yeah, I'm all for split screen.
Personally, I think online gaming is ruining split screen gaming because if you play the former, there's no need to play with people around you. Though, I love the idea of split screen online gaming. Haha, then we have no problems.
Here I go with the old school elitism again. I was playing online games when the N64 was released, yay Quake Team Fortress.
That being said, it's not so much online gaming that is killing single console multiplayer as much as it is the ease of connecting with modern consoles. Back in the Quake Mega TF days, installation of the game was a pain, and getting it to work online even moreso. It easily took a few hours to install and set up for online play. Meanwhile nowadays any joe can hook up and be playing online with their Xbox in minutes. As such it has finally gotten the appeal to the masses, so that is being catered to.
Of course, you could always do the really geeky thing and LAN party. I miss sitting in a room with four friend, all with our (desktop) computers hooked up, all jumping on the same team in an online game (Ghost Recon was a favorite). You get to all be together, and you kick everyone's asses.
@nellspixia@xanga - Totally agree there... x.x
A lot of games just dont have co-op designed into the game. When you make a game, you gotta design co-op in from the very beginning or else it wont be fun. And with game development cycles already taking multiple years for AAA titles, often it just can't fit into the schedule to get multiplayer that is fun in the game...or they'd rather focus on polishing up single player so that it is fun.
Also, pushing split screens is pretty hardware intensive mostly because of the graphics involved. A lot of the games that still support split screen, you'll notice a significant drop in texture quality and all that when you do play it split screen. This happens because you lose a LOT of the optimizations used in 3D rendering techniques today when you add multiple viewports. Developers also spend a lot of time pushing the hardware as hard as they can with a single viewport...adding another just makes it fairly hard without compromising the single player experience. Forcing players to play online rather than split screen solves all of this because each system can handle their own viewports independantly.
Yeah, that's probably true- bummer too.
I'm honestly more concerned about simulated multiplayer matches were you play on a map with a bunch of AIs for practice. Killzone had this option- and it was 20x more fun than playing through the campaign.
Wahahahaha what do they call it? Oh yeah: PROGRESS.
Online gaming ftw!
I wish they'd have both options like in COD4! When my flatmate bought RE5 the box said "Co-op" so we were really looking forward to a bit of split-screen amazingness, but then turns out you have to system link it? I WANT SPLIT SCREEN!! T_T;;.
First of all, buy an UNO deck.
Secondly, get Halo, Call of Duty, Killzone, Castle Crashers, or whatever any thing you want. If you want game that can be played physically, buy it at your local Target or Wal-Mart, otherwise, just make sure that on the back of any other game you buy, it says, "2 Players."
@BaLob@xanga - LMFAO! I didn't think of that and nor did any of the users who commented before you. Haha :D
I want my own screen. The dynamics of a split-screen always screw with the graphics and scaling.
I was a big fan of split screen back in the day with the N64 that was baller fun with goldeneye and all of the other multiplayer games. Xbox isnt really nice when it comes to split screening but the Wii is where all of that is at. Hell mario kart and all of those other games are made for those split screen shenanigans. With the 360 it is kind of annoying when you want to do co-op split screen and it just doesnt work *cough* resident evil *cough*. Its all good though.
