PC Gaming and Piracy: To Steal or Not to Steal?
So I've been talking with friends about how fun Ghostbusters is on my PC, and they all laugh at me. Arguments go from, "It doesn't even have multiplayer!" to "I can't believe you actually spent money on that when you could just download it!"
Well, yeah, I could've downloaded it, sure. But I didn't. Y'know why? To me, $30 is well worth the money. Sure, maybe it's only an eight hour long game. Sure, maybe there's no multiplayer. So what? It's not like it costs as much as the console versions do. It's half that! And since I recently built a new machine, it runs great! Most the time, games run better on my PC than they do on consoles. Sure, my PC costs four times as much as a PS3, but it's infinitely more useful, too.
It grinds my gears that people ever feel justified in pirating a game on PC, especially if the game hasn't even been out for a week (or even worse, if it hasn't even been released). I always hear the argument, "Piracy isn't affecting PC gaming. It's the crappy console ports that make PC gamers suffer". What about the developers that have to suffer? Imagine working for 10 hours of everyday for 10 months to release a product. Then imagine finding people downloading it within 24 hours. Yeah, bet it doesn't feel good.
The fact is, piracy has been around since the pre-Windows days. So piracy has been around long before console ports. Now that piracy is easier than ever before, what's to motivate a developer to spend a lot of time on a great PC game? Not much, I bet.
I enjoy being able to buy my games online and having them arrive in a couple hours on my hard drive without me ever leaving the house. Prices of PC games drop much more quickly than they do on consoles, also. I bought Bioshock on Steam for five bucks! Unreal Tournament III was $10.
What's everyone else's thoughts? I'm sure everyone games on consoles more than PC's. Why do you think that is?

Console game devs are losing more money on consoles withhigh production costs, the used game market and pirated games. That is why there is no new consoles and console game devs are going bankurpt right left and center.

mircosft and sony is losing billions on consoles, both companies are in the red. the only year microsft was not in the red was in 2008. They have been trying to force pc gamers in buying consoles. It is the reason more and more pc gamers are now buying their games online.

<-- ... Broke.. college... student.
I don't have money, nor time, for games. I did enjoy renting from the local game place for $5 a week, tho... when I haaaaad the time in hs.
Nearly every industry's hurting in a recession. And everybody wants to make their plight sound dire. But the risk to video game developers is highly exaggerated. They are suffering no more and considerably less than workers in other industries. Ask your average auto-worker how they feel about the recession and you'll get a considerably darker outlook? Younger financial services workers who were laid off in droves will have a similar tail. Even teachers and healthcare workers are being laid off in large numbers and education traditionally booms in a tight job market and healthcare is one of the biggest components of our economy.
In contrast Game sales were still booming at least up until the very end of 2008. I haven't seen statistics since then but I haven't heard anything about game sales going down. And Nintendo is breaking records with Wii console sales.
If the game industry is having problems it's largely their own fault for overproduction costs on games and making bad decisions running into a recession. Also a lot of it is carry over problems from retailers who are hurting and so are leaning more on game producers to share more of the profits in order to carry their games.
No, Developers as a group, game and other types, by and large are doing just fine. I see very little in the way of anything that can seriously be called suffering yet. And little of any hardships they deal with can reasonably be placed at the hands of piracy. Piracy has been pretty steady.
Sure independent developers sometimes have a hard time, especially in a down economy, but to blame piracy for their hardships is to miss the forest for the trees. Being independent MEANS having a hard time. It's specifically letting yourself forego the protections of industry so that you can develop games according to your own will. Piracy laws are in no way to protect them.
Historically it was what we call "piracy" today that was what enabled the movie industry and music industry in the U.S. to thrive and compete against global competitors. It's as American as Apple Pie. It's just in recent days when technology became so powerful as to enable regular people to "pirate" that it's suddenly become sooo terrible and horrible and bad and has to be STOPPED.
When it's done to the benefit of big business nobody bates an eyelash.
I am a PC gamer, and a bit broke, so I haven't bought anything in awhile. There are some developers I do not pirate from, and others I do not buy from. If a company puts draconian DRM (SecuROM, Starforce, etc) on their software, I refuse to purchase it. I've had games I purchased new not work due to DRM, so I refuse to stand for it any longer. I had to illegally crack my legally purchased copy of Fallout 3 (Bethesta, don't do it again or you join EA on the "Do Not Buy" list).
In a nutshell:
DRMed - I won't pay
Not DRMed - I won't pirate
I'll not go into the console vs PC thing. Too long a rant for a single comment. I'll just mention I'm a PC gamer and leave it at that.
@Dargon@xanga - I can see this sentiment.
I bought a copy of The Witcher for PC - the goddamn thing wouldn't work for WEEKS until I was able to find a patch that disabled the protection. For the un-knowing the copy protection is called TAGES and what it does it is essentially has two different sets of data in the same logical place on the CD (think of two houses sharing the same address) - Depending on how the CD is accessed, different data shows up. What this does is create confusion when the disk is read or copied - so that if the disk is copied, a vital part of the game (a main character for example) is not present and thus the game is unplayable. The GAME knows which is which, and so, on a legit copy of the game, the information is there, but your CD burner does not - so it skips the hidden data. The game was fantastic, but I will never EVER again purchase anything with the TAGES logo on it, or ProjektRED for that matter.
Prince of Persia? That shit didn't even ask for a CD key, and when my CD broke - i re-bought it.

If your a dick to your customer, we sure won't buy from you, thats for sure.
