Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled.
Banjo Kazooie and
Banjo Tooie.
We've been seeing a rash of re-makes of classic games this summer, and part of me has to wonder at what has brought about this relatively recent phenomenon. Gamers have become rabid over some of these releases in the past couple of months, and they're not even new games! Simply put, these are games we've played before with minor tweaks and graphical updates. TMNT did go a bit further with the graphics sprucing, but it generally remains the same game.
Why do we need this? Have we all suddenly become so nostalgic for games we've played hundreds of times before? Banjo Kazooie was a great game when I was in middle school; I would play that sucker for hours on end, completely sucked into the world and collecting those, well, everything! But is it really worth shelling out (excuse the pun) more cash to play something I've finished before?
Companies like Rare certainly seem to think so, and with the success of Nintendo's retro games on
WiiWare, we probably won't be seeing an end to this anytime soon. Is this rash going to fade with time? Don't make me break out the lotion, people, spend more time on your new games rather than throwing stuff at us from the way-back machine.

Give me my FF VII and VIII remake damn it!!
I don't think so at all, as long as the games being remade are truly worth the act of being redone. And of course, throwing the EXACT same game with nothing but a graphical update would be a mistake. The inclusion of some kind of bonus dungeon or the like (or perhaps several) would be necessary, I think, to really make it a decent idea.
Even without additional bonus material, some games are just great for remake. Part of the reason I bought Contra 4 on DS was because I knew it came with the original Contra included. I am currently playing FFIII and FFIV remakes on DS. I very much enjoy those because I missed out on them the first time around. I bought Chrono Trigger on DS even tho it is a direct port from the SNES game I loved so much. Much of this is because I don't really feel like taking my SNES out of storage (and arguing with my brother over who technically 'owns' the system from when we were kids now that we live in different states from each other). It helps that it is also one of my favorite games.
I just think that sometimes it is worth it for the consumer to have the remake. A lot of it is convenience. I want to play a very classic game, but I don't want to have to hook up my old system just to play it. So in that sense, I think it does make sense. If I loved the game enough the first time and care enough replay wise to bust it out every once in a while, I'm perfectly willing to pay a resonable amount for a remake. And for the developers, it is a good way for a smaller development studio to get work without taking too much risk.
I find remakes on different consoles really helpful; I don't want to have to pull out my N64 to play OoT if I can just get it on my Wii, and I don't want to have to buy a SNES to play Super Mario World 2 when I can play it on my GBA. It also helps those who didn't have that N64 to begin with play those games with their new Wii console, etc.
Five different remakes on the same console would be excessive, sure, but having a WiiWare version of Banjo Kazooie is hardly a cop-out; it's a great help in making these games more accessible to new gamers, or to give us lazy gamers an easy way of playing the oldies.
I hate re-makes :(
@TrojanWade@xanga - I hear ya on Chrono Trigger! I bought the playstation version and the DS too. I'm just waiting for square to finally do another game in the series.
Some games do deserve a facelift. Not to ruin the previous gaming engine, but because of lack of technology it was held back.
TONS of Final Fantasy games would be stunning as remakes and have the RPG genre thriving again in the world of console gaming. That's becuase people actually want to see human renders of Cloud or Squall or Zidane in stunning visual effects. They want to see the worlds they grew up with come alive again. Or atleast I do. Hell I wouldn't mind paying 150 dollars for any Final Fantasy 7-9 remake as long as it stayed true to the regular gaming engine.
These are pretty much spruced-up ports. TMNT looks pretty dreadful though... why couldn't they keep the original sprite artwork?
Anyway, it's the same as in Hollywood. There are so many remakes and sequels and reboots because they're safe bets. People recognize them. They feel safe with the familiar, a.k.a. nostalgia is a powerful, comfortable force. In this shitty economic clime, few studios are going to gamble on some scary, unknown property.
I don't know, I'm torn on this. As much as I love new games... I LOVE it when old games get revamped and re-released. Like the DQ games. I was actually just talking about it with my husband - so many new DS games use the touch screen, BADLY, because they feel they have to... and this is something that we feel the DS is doing poorly. But I feel that republishing all these old games is something they're doing right for once. Not only are they reaching out to the people who remember them, but they're also reaching players who would otherwise not have known these games... and who now don't have to deal with crappy touch screen stuff.
Then again, I'm thinking of RPGs mostly right now. I don't know about other kinds of games..
