  • Level Grinding

I have to say it as a more casual RPGamer. In many cases, I cannot stand level grinding. The tedium can be equal to chafing myself across the neck with a dull hacksaw; after a while I just wanna stop and off myself with something more convenient. Like a bullet to the head.

Oh wait, hold that thought. Persona is actually a bad example, at least far as my experience with Persona 4 goes. I pretty much have to start the game over since my fights with the enemies in Kanji's dungeon have devolved into luck-oriented slugfests. Having to go up almost a dozen levels before leaving each dungeon is tedious and stupid, especially since I'm so interested in the story of P4 and the stylishness of the game as a whole. I don't know if I'll ever be willing to one day pick up the PS2 controller and get back into it.

Perhaps the only time I can tolerate grinding is in Pokemon, which I only play seriously enough to level Pokemon to 50 and only further than that for non-multiplayer purposes. And it's not even about taking every random fight as it is about fighting every single enemy trainer along your current route. I do actually bother with effort values, but the amount of time and energy one has to put into making a tourney worthy team is just insane to me.

In general, I can handle grinding in very short doses, but I get frustrated if I have to put so much effort into something that slows the pace of a game to a crawl.  Maybe if there was a game that actually made grinding fun, gave me steady, satisfying, consistent incentive to grind, maybe. I hear MMO's are like that, but I don't want to bother because I KNOW that's one delicious bear trap I'm never going to get out of...

Do you think level grinding should be a necessary part of certain games, or do you think it's frustrating and primitive by today's standards?

I think it's awful and tedious...it makes me feel like a game is cheaply extending the life of the game and BORING ME TO DEATH.

I love how many people just dispise grinding in games...
It doesn't bother me at all, Its basically saying "How hard do I want the next battle to be for me" It is really coming down to how hard its gonna be, and I love to go in as a complete underdog.

As to games making you have to grind to get into certain areas "must be certain level to enter" or something, not so much fun.

When I played World of Warcraft (I don't play now, because i was on a private server and they upgraded it so it sucks horribly), all you could do was grind for the shit you needed. It was actually pretty okay, because i knew that i would get a reward in the end after i killed something. It did get really nerve racking after spending an hour trying to kill a boss, and then it didn't drop the item i needed. But overall, grinding is what makes games like that. Of course I wished it was slightly easier and would yield a greater reward, but there's nothing i can do about it lol.

I don't think I have played any recent single player RPG where I was forced to grind anything in order to move along.  Older RPGs on the SNES were different but I still didn't mind that much.  MMOs take it to the extreme though since it is the only thing you can really do.

I do like level grinding. Practice makes perfect, after all.

You wanna feel the grind? Play Dragon Quest.

  • proudsmartypants@xanga

It is the most irritating thing ever.

    Maplestory...primo example.Yeah shutup I played it.

I like it. I can rush through and get tough fights. In RPGs it's too easy to play mindlessly; you can't if you have to grind to stay up to your level and rush as fast as you can. If you take that option, always being under-level because you didn't grind, the games can be quite fun.

I like to do it when I have time... but you're right about it being a bitch to do when you're absorbed in the story; a lot of the time, I lose interest because it takes too long to just level up... =P

I remember playing a few RPGs and never having to grind because I'd spend an hour running across the entire world trying to remember where I was supposed to go next.

  • frozen_peaches@xanga

There are times when I am playing an RPG when I must go grind in order to progress or practice. I think it's when I have to sit and grind for what seems like FOREVER and I forget where I was in the story that is the most annoying thing ever. It sucks.

I hate level grinding. Or gold farming. That said, if there's sufficient story motivation, I can grind/farm without hating myself (for a quest or as part of the story), but if I just have to hunt down and kill monsters purely for the sake of bumping up some numeric value so that I can move on to the next area, no. In modern RPGs, that's just bad design.

  • chadwilly@xanga

All is needed is a pinch of patience, its a virtue you know.

  • haloed@xanga

Besides pokemon and WoW, I ****HATE**** level grinding and extremely frequent random encounters.

  • GodaiTheRonin@xanga
I suggest never touching ffxi if you hate grinding. I think grinding is fun sometimes, like most things in life the good things need to be worked for.
  • HiroBoi@xanga

    I like griding.

Both in video games and otherwise.

    hah :]

  • Dargon@xanga

I hate the grind. Things can be done right to hide the grind, like an appropriate number of encounters to get you there naturally and the like, but those are rare to find.

  • TrojanWade@xanga

I dont mind grinding ever. I think it isn't the greatest game design when players are forced to grind, though.  Sometimes I grind for fun if I know I only have a certain amount of time to play.  Then I will hang close to a save point and just grind.

  • Takingthe38th@xanga

Level grinding is a little different in Disgaea. Just... a little.

  • BlehhItsTu@xanga

It's just as bad as getting an education. That's why. They want to make people put an effort into boring things in order to become stronger. How else would we do it?

I don't mind grinding that much. It makes you work to achieve something instead of the game just handing it to you.
With your pokemon example - I loved the game and didn't mind leveling the pokemon. There was a certain strategy to it.
And as far as MMOs, I play WoW. I enjoy the game, and grinding is what makes up the game. Although, it sucks when you grind a raid/instance for a certain item and it doesn't drop or someone ninjas it from you -_-

I grind and grind and grind in Final Fantasy games. Sometimes it sucks, but usually I feel awesome after I achieve my goal. Grinding doesn't necessarily keep me from playing any of the games or make me feel like I want to quit. It's just what you have to do to continue through the game. I generally like to overgrind so my levels are over what they should be early on. So I don't have to grind as often, but when I do, it's a long process.

I actually liked the way Chrono Trigger was done. You were pretty much forced to gain levels since you had to fight the monsters you ran into. Sometimes battles were avoidable, but not usually.

    Good games.

  • Sleepypeter1809@xanga

it has been necessary since i was 8 and playin rpgs -.-, if you are not willing to train, or "grind" as today's new age gamers call it then don't complain when a boss tramples you.

but the fact that an rpg should be played for its story is understandable, just who would agree with you if you could beat sephiroth at lvl 10 -.-? honestly think abt that one for a sec, 1st class soldier and a mindless puppet. nuff said

or in dissidia now, haha even a lvl 100 char has a hard time owning chaos

  • sailorsakura9@xanga

I play RO and all you can really do is level grind.  I hate level grinding, especially when I'm soloing (and the exp loss of 3% is terrible).  I only like level grinding if I'm with a fun party.  I hate it when I'm in a party and nobody talks, it's just straight out leveling.  I start falling asleep.
