  • Waiting for Diablo 3? Try Torchlight

Are you wistfully looking forward to Diablo 3? Every news item about StarCraft 2 or WoW making you wish D3 had something resembling a release date? Check out Torchlight, a Diablo-esque RPG just waiting for you to explore its dungeons.

I downloaded the free demo through Steam on a whim, and the full game came out last week with a reasonable sub-$20 price point. Torchlight has a lot in common with the Diablo franchise: it offers three different classes (bow/gun toting female, a male tank, and a male mage), a dungeon attached to a town to explore, and low base requirements (this game has a Netbook mode, for crying out loud). Two co-designers from Diablo and Diablo II were involved in this project, as well as the composer for those games. However, Torchlight does bring some different things to the table.

Pets: When you start the game, you can choose a bobcat-looking feline or wolf-like dog to be your faithful companion. Unlike some other games, the pets are actually useful. You can set your pet to passive, defensive, or aggressive mode to help you fight the creatures of the deep. When your inventory is full, you can give items for your pet to hold. You can even send your pet back to town to sell its inventory to NPCs, which in this game is really useful.

Don't we look dashing among demon carcasses?

Fishing: I know, I know, fishing in this kind of game? What the heck? In some of the levels of the dungeon, there are little pools of water you can fish in to collect different kinds of fish. You can feed these fish to your pet for different effects: one turns your pet into a spider with different stats, another turns it into a goblin-type pet, and a third increases its speed and attack. At least to me, this is something new and different.

Other Notes: Another thing I liked while playing the demo is that your HP and MP regenerate automatically. I really appreciate that because I really hate when you have to burn through potions when it's hard to get back to town without a town scroll. I do have a few small complaints about the game, though. Sometimes the view wasn't the best, and I really wish you could spin the camera; the only options in the game are to zoom in on your character. It made things really hard to see at some points. Lastly, I would really like a multiplayer version of this like Diablo, but when I read further, the developers are working on an MMO set in the Torchlight universe for future release, so I'll just sit tight for that for now.

Have you tried Torchlight yet? If not, what other games are tiding you over until Diablo 3 is released?
