Do You Have a Habit of Wasting Time On Video Games?
Let's face it; games are a time investment. Self-immersion comes at the price of the money you put down and the hours you put in, regardless of whether it's some epic MMO, an arcade fighting game, or even one of the addictive new apps on Facebook.
But do you have a habit of playing games a bit too much for your own good?
When I was still gunning for my Bachelor's, a number of my friends had serious game addiction problems. Being a prominent member of one of the Asian culture clubs, I'd often come in to see everybody huddled together around the Wii or occasionally on their laptops to play WoW and even CounterStrike. Some failed classes, even one of my friends was forced to transfer and start fresh, all because they didn't prioritize. I was the president and founder of my school's fighting game club so it goes without explanation that I could have focused my attentions elsewhere. I'm also close with people who since graduated and already have serious occupations; whenever we talk, they usually laugh that they're on Mafia Wars instead of doing what they need about that next big project. I have no idea if they're kidding, but I bet it's at least half true.
We featured a similar post in the summer with statistics from 2007-2008. The numbers may be a bit dated, but according to this, players age 26 or younger generally spend about 18 hours a week playing video games. I presume that hasn't much changed.
Heck, one of my first posts on Hardest Level dealt with a statement by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino on video games being evil. Well, I made good on my promise to ask him what he meant about it at New York Anime Fest '09, and this article makes brief mention of our exchange. When even a busy, old-guard professional like Tomino admits to some random fan like myself he's prone to getting caught up playing games, his fears for the medium can seem almost justified.
So, does time go by a bit too quickly when you play video games? How much?

8 Hours passes by all too quickly. But I don't see it as time wasted. If I felt it was being wasted I probably wouldn't play.
Time goes by way too fast when you're having fun! I haven't been on in awhile bc of my other priorities, but nonetheless, video games will always be a part of my life!
Back in my old Halo 2 days 8 hours goes by pretty quickly :p. WoW goes a bit more slowly though, but that's another good time killer. I think it all depends on how well you're doing within the game-- allowing you to focus more on the game or less on the game. So if you're doing well you're probably going to continue to focus and play/ doing badly, (depending on the person) you're probably going to at least get annoyed and stop a little more quickly if you're frustrated. :]
Yes. I often spend too much time on it. It's my primary form of entertainment, and my exclusive form of escapist entertainment. My books are non-fiction.Sometimes I find myself playing almost as much as I work. Last Lent, the release of SFIV really shot the whole fasting thing. I just as well not have fasted o_o.
Honestly, I don't like wasting my time on games, either. But I don't know how else to fill up my day.
video games are okay as long as you keep in mind that getting what you need done in life comes first than video games...business over pleasure.
this is exactly why video games have a bad rep, when really it should be those particular people who get the shit for not putting things in good order. there ARE people out there who play games but know how to prioritize.
I talked about this somewhat in my post on getting to a "good stopping point." For me, there is that desire to accomplish something substantial each time I play, so when I have to repeat missions, it usually spells doom for my self-imposed time restraints. I suspect the need for control and a comfort zone are also factors in people's gaming addictions/inability to prioritize.
I used to waste a lot of time on games, back in college, when I was using it as my main time waster. That said, I think I would've wasted time on something else if it weren't video games. Nowadays, I game with moderation, mostly limiting it to a few hours on weekends. This means slow going on most games, but it's better than wrecking my personal and professional life over them.
Well, I do love games. But then, I know where the priorities should be. Usually I do all my chores for whole week ahead, just to have few days to play when I want, so nothing really gets harmed too much... And if I need to learn, then I don't play, even if I really want to.
Stop playing video games and focus on your life!
YES...OMGPOP.com is so addicting! i can't stop playing the games on there
I'm making all A's and B's and I invest a lot of time in gaming. Also, I'm going to double major in Graphic Design and Interactive Design and Game Development so... yeah.
I play about 30-40 hours of XBOX 360 a week.
Saturdays and Sundays disappear! One minute its lunch time and I'm just pressing start, the next thing I know it's completely dark and the sun has set. I love it and hate it at the same time.
I definitely don't feel it's a waste of time. I play with my fiance and friends and we have a really good time.
I'm unemployed and out of school, though. We just moved. So once I finally find a job my time will probably be cut in half.
Video games are amazing and fun, but there are definitely more important things that do come first, and it's really just a matter of finding a good balance between the two.
I love video games!! ... but I didn't bring any of my game systems except my DS to college. That way, I wouldn't be tempted to play haha. Usually I can spend the entire day playing x___x
