• Modern Warfare 2: An Omen of the Future?

  It's time to crack open the champagne, my gaming brethren. Another game is shattering sales records and putting the once-mighty movie industry to complete and utter shame. In its first five days of availability, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has reeled in over $550 million in sales. That's more than any movie has ever made in the same time-frame. That's damn impressive.
  
  So what does that mean for us? Well, nothing has really changed. I'm sure we'll all be gamers until the bitter end. However, I think this sends a strong message to people (parents, old farts, politicians even) who have been skeptical about the role games play in our daily lives. This is a true feather in our cap. It's a feather that says games are here, they're a big part of our lives and an increasingly larger part of our economy.
  
  Still, as big of a turning point as this is for entertainment, it's also says a whole lot about who's playing. Let's face it: kids and teenagers generally don't have the money to buy a sixty dollar game as soon as it comes out. I'll bet that a good deal of MW2's buyers were people who played the original Call Of Duty in college and are just now starting their own families. As time moves forward, more moms and dads will have grown up with games, and will continue playing them probably until they're old and gray.
  
  That's right. We stand at a point in time where games are starting enjoyed by every age group, not just kids and young adults. One day, playing against your dad in Modern Warfare 5 will probably seem as natural as playing against your buddies does now.
