How do I feel about the mass of girls on the Wii? I'm female and I actually really dislike the Wii, and borderline hate it. I've never played anything I particularly enjoyed on it, and all the hype just annoys me. I don't own a current generation console, but when I get around to getting one, it's going to be a PS3, or possibly a 360. However, I have female friends who aren't into video games in the least, but do own a Wii for Wii Fit and other stuff like that. I can't say how much they actually use it, though.
Do you think that most actual "gamer girls" are on the Wii, or do you think the number is inflated by girls who just have Wii Sports and Wii Fit? Should the other systems try to reach out more and attract the female audience?

I think the popularity of games like Wii Fit do help with sales towards females. While it's true that other consoles don't have a lot of games specifically aimed towards women, I don't think that's really an issue. Girls can like FPS and RPG games just as much as men do.
I detest the Wii. Since it's release i've gone from being a Nintendo girl to a Microsoft one. It's probably only a matter of time before I sell out to Sony too. haha
I'm pretty sure the wii is aimed at kids mainly, but to females as well.
I think the Wii definitely appeals to more casual gamers, both male and female alike. It's just that a majority of whoever they're counting as female gamers are more casual. But maybe I'm just wrong in thinking it's not a console for the "true" or "hard(er)core" gamer. Just my two cents, off the top of my head.
Edit: On second thought, I guess I think stuff like the Wii sports games draw out even further the casual end of the spectrum of gamers, and makes formerly casual gamers like myself seem "more" akin to the "hardcore" players.
No woman I know who really likes to game owns a Wii. However, I know that all those who do don't game.
I actually like Wii
Not a fan of the wii. Can't stand playing it. Maybe with a group of friends I can but it's lame alone. I like playing Xbox 360 and PS3. :)
I like the Wii the best cause I'm not into shooters, JRPGs, realistic sports games, or traditional fighters, which is what most PS3/360 games are and which rarely (if ever) appear on Nintendo consoles. I reject the notion that a "hardcore" gamer has to be into one of those genres in order to be a true gamer, which I think contributes a lot to why people think the only people who would buy a Wii are people who aren't real gamers.
Which isn't to say I think it's gold, cause I only play maybe five games on it. But I can only name one 360 game I'd be willing to play, and three PS3 games I'd be willing to buy, so that's still better than nothing.
As for whether the other consoles should cater to girls, I think they'd get a wider variety of players if they just had a wider variety of games. Those two consoles are getting narrower and narrower in terms of who they're trying to cater to, which is one obvious reason why most people who have either are representative of a comparatively specific demographic.
I'm a girl and we have a Wii and 360, but I've never played the 360 without my husband. I've bought the Harry Potter games for the Wii and feel more comfortable turning it on by myself without breaking it! I don't want to be the one responsible if the 360 red rings again when I use it.
fuck the wii, give me my xbox 360 controller and left4dead2!
Wii is alright...It gets old quick. I like my 360 :]
I agree with most of the others here. The Wii is truly a console that caters to the non-gamers of society. Its focus is not on hardcore gaming. The reason there are so many females out there on the Wii is probably that proportionally, there are a lot less gamer chicks than guys. It isn't an ironclad rule, since there are some gamers who appreciate and enjoy the Wii. But there are simply significantly less of them using the Wii than non-gamers.
I think the wii fit has a lot to do with why a lot of girls own it. Most of the ones I know that have a wii also have the fit thing for it.
Personally I would go for a xbox360. Only thing I would want a wii for is that Zelda Twilight Princess game
If it is the Wii Sport and Fit that's grabbing girls for Gaming it because "Maybe" the girls buying them are insecure about their bodies but at the same time have a Guy friend she is interested in but hes a gamer so if he knows she plays something it a + and she can get a foot in with him (considering the dude is a Wii sports junkie LOL).
But im a Otaku (Japanese Anime Fanatic) And I attend Anime conventions And see MANY girl Cosplaying there fave game characters and Playing in the Arcade rooms. games far superior then Wii Sports or Fit. im talking Halo, Gears of War, Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil types, And also games like Street Fighter 4, Soul Calibur, Super Smash Brothers, and Guilty Gear.
I would like to say that nothingspecial666 has a point she didnt notices making. I also notice that Girls that own any nintendo consoles get because they are Zelda Fans. PROPS to you for being a Zelda fan also.
also I agree with Lord_of_the_Pixie_stixBecause Wii Other then Fit and Sports Tend to bring in gamers that Like RPGS and Adventure games. The PS3 And 360 are more focused on War Like Shoters. and a Occasonal Beat'em Up (Devil May Cry) Yes it pretty Narrow for them too. I personal dont give a flying fuck for 360 but if a game for a series I love turns up on it i will play it.
I go for Games like Devil May Cry, Zelda, Mario Kart, Mirrors Edge, Final Fantasy And BlazBlue.
And I know many girls that do also. which brings me back to the start of my Reply.
That Test results is mostly (in personal opinion so dont argue respect it and i respect yours) Is of Girls A trying to "Fit in" (get it?) or figure since Wii sports is soooooo damn easy to play. they say Im gonna by one and play this guy in it so he thinks im cool. Than girls that just had love for Nintendo From the start.
SORRY SOO LONG BUT I HOPE IT GAVE YOU AN IDEA ON THE SUBJECT.
FYI I dont care what a chick is playing. Its Hot reguardless. . . =^_^= Girl Gamers. . . We need more of them. . .Period!
my boy saiko ended that perfectly. Female Gamers = Sexiest women on the planet. Seriously, gaming is something i love and enjoy to do and to have a woman into videogames just as much as me guarantees us alot of quality time and gettin to know eachother through playing co-op games. Personally, i don't care what systems shes playing or why, if shes a gamer, she a gamer and i'm feelin it. Now, i will say i hate posers, so don't front to me like your a gamer just because you see i'm heavy into games and then when super mario comes on you have no clue of whats going on or who the characters are. all thats gonna do is get you a deuce chunk at you....
real female gamers are where its at and they get nothing but props and love from me..... REAL female gamers.....
and to answer the ending quesiton of the initial statement.... i think the number is inflated by girls who just have Wii Sports and Wii Fit. most chicks that i know hate the wii honestly, like saiko said their either into the halo games or the rpg/adventure games.....
I love the Wii because I love Nintendo. I like their cartoony characters and I don't mind that the graphics aren't very good. I like the motion controls. I think it's cool because it's different and there's no other console like it.
Granted, I like a couple Playstation games (Katamari Damacy and Spyro the Dragon,) but those are about it for my list of non-Nintendo games I like to play. I think girls like Nintendo because it's easier to play and many of the characters are colorful cartoons.
I just want a Wii so I can play SSBB.
i'm a casual gamer, and i have a wii, and my brother has a ps3... then i also have a ds lite/dsi and a pc..
i dont really play as often as i did way back when. but when i did, i was played with my playstation 2 more so than my gamecube. now my brother is the primary gamer, and he plays with the ps3 while i watch. we play the wii together because it has more multiplayer games that dont rely on heavily on skill or have a relatively short learning curve. such as mario party 8, mario kart, wii sports resort, super mario smash borthers brawl, super mario brothers wii, but i think i like the multiplayer games on the game cube waaay better than the ones on the wii (marioparty and mario kart)
on the ps3, we play SFIV, pixel junk monsters, ragdoll kung fu, fat princess, buzz, and rock band 2. now that theres speculation that ps2 games will now be released on the psn, i might get back to playing older games. it's funny, now that i work in the video game/electronic section of the store, i dont play video games as often as i'd like.
i've been wondering why ps3 doesnt have a ddr game.. i mean xbox 360 has them... then i realized the difference in graphics.. sorta like ps1 games on the ps2... it didnt look right
and because i work in the video game section we have to have these product knowledge checks. and some of the questionaires said something like nintendo is now marketed specifically for casual gamers and families, not hardcore gamers. and that females tend to be the ones who like the wii/ds because of the pick up and play aspect of most of their games, it's also the reason why girls like puzzle games and simulations (sudoku, bejeweled, tetris, bust-a-move, proffesor layton, brain academy, nintendogs, cooking mama, the sims, animal crossing)
Pfft.
I love Wii. I love xBox 360. I love Left For Dead, Grand Theft Auto, Halo, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, among other titles. I also love Playstation. Why? Because each console brings something different to the table, and I love variety. If I'm feeling particularly adventurous, PS3. If I'm in the mood to slaughter, xBox 360, if I want some fluffy, friendly cuteness - Wii.
big deal, so what?
The Wii is aimed at everyone, aside from probably hardcore gamers. It's so popular because everyone can play it, almost everyone is interested. It's a new design, it's different from the typical console. Maybe it's because I major in Robotics, but I really appreciate the Embedded system that makes the Wiimote. The Wii outsold the 360 and the PS3, and good for Nintendo. I have always been a Nintendo fan. Take it from a female who actually worked in a game store. If you purchase the 360 or the PS3, I highly, highly suggest you get the warranty. About 60% of 360s are defective. Sorry, but that puts Microsoft at an even lower rank of products for me, and I already hate Microsoft as it is. Every console has good games on it. It really depends on what kind of games you like. I play a variety of games and despite the fact that I hate Microsoft, I'd play a good 360 game simply because it's a good game. I sure as hell wouldn't drop $600 on the PS3, and if you get it without a warranty and it breaks, you're shit out of luck with a $600 paperweight. But if a friend had it, I'd play a game on it if the game was good.
I don't.
XBox360 and PS2 are better.
I've loved playing Mario games since I was about 6. So I'm hardcore obsessed with all the new Mario stuff Nintendo has brought out for the wii, and love that you can download the old-school stuff too! ;D
I don't really like the Wii. Some of the game are alright but I just don't like the controller for most of 'em.
I personally like the Wii, but I don't hate bigger consoles. I honestly just don't have the time to get into games with stories like I used to.
Before, I would really get into playing games on my brother's 360 and such, but with school and all of the activities I have to do, I feel like the Wii is the most convenient and practical console for me to have.
Besides, I like how everyone in my family can get involved. My cousin is basically owning me in all of the balance games on Wii Fit and that is just unacceptable!
Is that a fact? :/
Mario Kart FTW.
