Is Sony Going To Start Charging For Its Playstation Network?
PSN is free, unlike Xbox Live. But maybe not for long; a recent interview with Masayuki Chatani, SCE's Chief Technical Officer, has revealed that they may be charging for their online service.

"Servers and the like have running costs, and we would face difficulties if our business depended solely on the sell-and-forget model... " Chatani said. "We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways. In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. "
That Sony is revealing this in the looming shadow of Christmas, especially in such a vague but telling manner, is a horrible idea for sales. And to believe, I was planning to treat myself to a PS3 Slim sometime over the holiday...
Do you think Sony will in fact start charging for PSN the same way Microsoft does for Xbox Live?

Wow Sony will reach a new low if they do. I can't believe that that's such a major pro when you list the pros and cons of PS3 vs Xbox. I'm sure they need the money though. 20 trillion dollars a month isn't enough.

If they do that might be a problem. Cuz I'm playing and paying for my xbox live now. But once I get a PS3 I don't know if I can afford to pay for both online services. :(

A lot of people think that PSN is crappy compared to XBL because it's not a paid service. I don't think people realize the actual cost of running such a large network around the world. I would understand if they started charging for the service. I wouldn't be happy about it, but I can see their point.

If they do then, I would think people would expect the price for the actual system to drop? As it stood, that was never a pro for me. It was something unnecessary to me that I was supposed to feel made the price of the PS3 ok. I don't game online, it's not my cup of tea.
Though, if I WERE an online gamer and I had bought a PS3 a few years back at the full price expecting to be able to use the network for free... I would not be happy. Though I believe making it so that people who bought their PS3 a while back could use the network for free and those who buy it later have to pay would be complicated and not work too well...

I think they should. I never understood why they didn't. Things cost money, and they can offer a better service for a price than free, cut down on cheaters more easily, etc. This will be good for consumers in the long run. When I had to choose between a PS3 and a 360 one of the selling points of the 360 was that XBL cost money. I could expect a better service as a result. I've been wanting to save and buy a PS3, so this is good news indeed.

I hope they don't, i''ll stop using online services if they do. Hate xbox for letting people pay and now ps3 too? Damnnnnnnn. It's like.. you pay TONS for the console.. ALOT for the game and now they want monthly payments to be able to play online? Don't think so, i'd rather spend the money on clothes :)

If they start doing this, I just won't use their online service. An online service is one of those things I think I've already paid for when I purchase the system and pay the monthly internet bill.

@KliffyTaicho@xanga - Playstation network is Crap right now. Microsoft owns them with Xbox Live. I have both consoles before you flame. My 360 network is so far superior to the crapstaton 3 network it;s not funny. I have to use my 360 to talk to all my friends while playing ps3 games, what a joke.Thats because the playstaion network doesn't let you play different games and talk to your friends, thats horrible.I would gladly pay money to have a real playstation network. I like the PS3 more but the 360 just offers way more because of Xbox Live

I like PS3 better than the XBoX and every other consolee AND online services its one of the things that i like the most. the games are really expensivee so ii agree with some of the ppl here if they do that, they should drop the prices for the game and the console as well...

Xbox may offer a better live but in all honesty, who needs little avatar dudes and private chat crap, you play online to play online, Sony as ive seen so far has a better "lag perventing server" but I will not pay for not having the features xbox has plus more, from sony. the console was overly priced the games are overly priced. so it should be free, Stop trying to screw us with your money loss making the ps3. drop the price in games and give better warrenties (Sp) screw dropping the price in the console we already own one, just give us the warrenty. and a better network too. then we shall pay, and cheaper then xbox lives only offer 1 year memberships and give the console 3 months free when bought.

XBL sucks PERIOD. I have Wii, PS3, and XBox360. Used to have "Gold" membership to XBL--what a bunch of crock. Slow and intermittent service. Been slowly moving my favorite games to PS3 platform because online experience is better--less lag. Before you start flaming on and on about how it's the game maker doing the hosting...well, the game makers seem to do better hosting on PS3 platform then! When PS3 starts charging for premium membership...it will be time to sell the PS3 and get a REAL BluRay player! PS3 USED to be the standard bearer when it came to blu-rays, but...

@canicus@xanga - okay but if playstation started charging their product would stop selling and the Xbox 360 would be the major gaming system tha 360 already has more games and more users. The playstation does have Blu-Ray, but thats no excuse to start charging people fo a 2-5hundred dollar system isnt that enough already? I am a BIG fan of the Playstation but if they start charging that would be very dumb they started the system not having to pay and now you have to pay all of a sudden, they will be no better than microsoft.

The Ps3 has so many users because it is FREE if they start charging then gamers might as well go with the Xbox 360, it has more games and more online users.
