  • Games You Love (That Everyone Hates!)

Inspired by a previous post by chani.

So bad, it's good. That's all that needs to be said.

Sometimes the good games really are the popular ones. Anything that can make a game of the year nomination is worth my attention, even if it is overrated. But there are also games that are scorned or ignored for their flaws, and in some cases I can still find these games fun for the sake of being fun. This is why I often end up liking titles that often frustrate others or fall into their categorization of 'awful'.

A lot of people hate Armored Core. Tinkering your machine can take even longer than actually finishing a mission or fighting another player, and the controls at first seem clunky and awkward. Also, certain parts and builds are just too powerful counting on which installment you're playing and because of the lag in online play, rapid-fire weapons and blades become way more viable than any of the other weapons available. That said, it's still the most fun giant robot series out there, and offline versus matches are incredible since the variety of the game opens up and it can be played as it was meant to be played.

Castlevania Judgement is widely reviled for being such a mediocre game. But for a big fighting game and Castlevania fan like me, it was still novel to finally see Simon Belmont and other popular characters in the series trading blows. The horribly executed story was still very interesting, firmly entrenched in series mythos, and could have easily been improved. I wish for a proper, much-improved sequel to come out in the future, but that's unlikely given the game's lack of success.

Megaman X6 was made in a quick attempt to recapitalize on the X franchise, which was supposed to end with Zero's death in X5. Thus we get what some say is the worst Megaman game of all time, one of the most rushed, lopsided games in the entire franchise with bizarre level design and unbalanced gameplay. And I love it, perhaps because it actually rewards players for playing recklessly, meaning it's the kind of game where I can let my thumbs do the thinnking. It's somehow fun to play as Megaman X with a beam sword, and at the very least both him and Zero handle like a dream.

Gungrave Overdose was actually a step down from the original, featuring grainy graphics and a story even more whacked out than part 1. But like Megaman X6, it's the arcadey kind of game I can play with my brain shut to off. It keeps (no expands) upon the visual flair of the original and it's also the kind of mindless action where you just shoot at everything that moves and dodge a lot.

Do you love any games that everyone hates?
